Who we are

We are an interdisciplinary team of researchers who want to understand how complex behaviours support social connections. We approach this mission by integrating different scientific perspectives. We embrace diversity of thought, skills, and experience.

  • No one knows everything, and there is always something to discover. Our team advances knowledge of the natural world, each other, and ourselves by becoming lifelong learners.

  • Honesty and trust are the backbones of impactful science and the teamwork needed to achieve it. Our team lives by ethical principles to conduct research and disseminate findings to the community.

  • Scientific progress happens faster when diverse groups of people work together effectively. Our team embraces a win-win mentality by capitalizing on differences to accomplish shared goals.

Meet the Team

Morgan Gustison, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor and Lab Director

Dr. Gustison takes an integrative approach to understand how social behaviors evolve and their mechanistic underpinnings. Her background is interdisciplinary, and her research spans several species and biological levels. Dr. Gustison received undergraduate degrees in zoology and psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied the social behavior of marmosets and wild Argentinean owl monkeys. She went on to do a masters at the University of Roehampton, and her research was on stress and coping styles in Barbary macaques. Dr. Gustison did her doctoral research at the University of Michigan. This work was on the evolution of vocal complexity in wild Ethiopian gelada monkeys. Dr. Gustison was then a NIH T32 postdoctoral fellow in the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. Her research at PNI focused on marmoset vocal development and biomechanics. She was also a postdoc at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research explored neural systems that support pair bonding in prairie voles. She received a NIH K99 career award to develop a new line of work on the neurobiology of prairie vole vocal communication. Dr. Gustison began a faculty position in the Psychology Department at Western University in 2023, where she established the Laboratory of Social NeuroEthology.
